The Hidden Costs of Legal Problems - Stress and Health

Almost 50% of Canadians over the age of 18 will experience a legal problem that they consider serious or difficult to resolve; i.e. debt problems, employment issues, neighbour disputes etc. A recent survey disclosed that almost one in five people with a legal problem experienced stress or emotional difficulty as a direct result of dealing with the legal problem. 39.1 % of respondents aged 18 to 35, experienced physical health problems as a result of the legal problem. That number increased to 61.5% of respondents aged 55 to 65. In other words, if you are facing a serious or difficult legal problem, it is possible that you will also experience stress or health related problems.

The Lessons: First, be aware that you are likely to experience emotional or physical health problems if involved in a serious legal problem and take steps to protect your emotional and physical health.

Second, when choosing a legal professional to assist you in resolving the problem, consider the role that this professional will play in reducing the potential emotional or health problems. Will the professional's communication style (regular updates or non-communication) reduce or increase the stress. Similarly, will the professional's style of resolution (aggression, stalling or passive) reduce or add to the stress. Discussion of these issues, with your legal professional, with a view to reducing the stress involved can make the legal resolution process less stressful.
